Architectural Terminology
Addition:
Additions involve new construction onto existing structures.
Construction Documents:
For all construction projects a set of Construction Documents must be prepared. These drawings will guide the contractor in building precisely according to the clients wishes.
We specialize in creating these documents.
Cover Sheet:
The first sheet that appears in the final set; it is a 3D overview of the project.
Produced during Design Development for all projects except Interior Design and Landscaping.
Demolition Plan:
A detailed plan view of the affected area which shows exactly which elements are to be removed or modified. Includes Details if needed.
Needed if the property's external appearance is affected; true for all New Homes and most Home Improvements.
Door & Window Schedule:
A schedule of doors and windows to be installed or replaced. Includes the information needed to order these from the manufacturer.
Provided whenever doors and windows are installed or replaced.
Electrical Layouts:
A detailed plan view showing electrical and lighting fixtures and connections.
Needed for all construction projects. Produced during Design Development. Finalized in Construction Documents.
Exterior Elevations:
Elevations views of the exterior faces of the finished construction.
Needed for all construction projects. Produced during Schematic Design Phase and finalized in Construction Documents Phase.
Floor Plan:
A plan view of the affected space which shows the nature and scope of the finished construction.
Needed for all construction projects. Produced during Schematic Design. Finalized in Construction Documents.
Foundation Plan:
A detailed plan view of the affected area which shows the loacations of the foundation walls which provides structural integrity to the building above.
Needed for all new construction. Produced during Construction Documents.
General Data Sheet:
Listed Index of Drawings.
Created for all Projects.
Hardscape Plan:
A plan view of the affected area which shows elements such as sidewalks, driveways, etc.
Needed for Hardscaping. (Typically included on other Sheets.)
Interior Design:
Interior Design is the art and science of enhancing the interior of a building to achieve a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing environment for those using the space.
Interior Elevations:
Elevation views of the major interior faces of the finished construction.
Needed for all construction projects except Landscape Design. Produced during Schematic Design for Interior Design. Produced during Design Development for all other Services. Finalized in Construction Documents.
Landscape Design:
Landscape Design is the art of using plant materials and planting beds to create beautiful outdoor spaces that enhance and enrich the exterior of a home.
Landscape Plan:
A plan view of the affected area which shows exact locations for all plant materials to be used.
Needed for all Landscape Designs.
New Home:
New Home Design involves new construction on a brand-new foundation.
Renovation:
Renovations involve modifications to a buildings' exterior and/or interior.
Roof Plan:
A plan view of the roof structure above which shows how rainfall is to be redirected.
Needed for all construction projects. Produced during Schematic Design. Finalized in Construction Documents.
Schematic Floor Plan:
The schematic floor plan is a rough representation of the New Home or Home Improvement. When completed, it should be accurate enough to estimate cost of construction, though not so complete that small changes cannot still be made.
A schematic floor plan is produced for all Home Improvement projects which may require an Architectural Design.
Site Plan:
The Site Plan is a bird's eye view including the property line and road connections.
Needed if the property's external appearance is affected. (Includes all New Homes and most Home Improvements.)
Wall Sections:
Section views of major wall types, which includes the information needed by the builder to build according to State and Local Building Codes.
Needed for all new construction. (Produced during Construction Documents.)
